Early Life and Personal Life
Mohammed Aamirhussain khan more popularly known as Aamir khan is an indian actor ,director and producer who is known for his works in hindi cinema. He is considered to be one of the finest actors in indian cinema till date. He was born and brought up in mumbai to Thaheer khan and Zeenathussian in a film family. His father was a well known figure in hindi cinema. amir khan was born as the eldest into a family with three siblings, Faisal khan, Farhat khan and Nikhat khan of which Faisal khan has acted in some hindi movies such as cameos in Khan's Qayamat se Qayamattak and many more. Many members of his family where active part of Bollywood then and even now. His nephew Imran khan too is an actor .Khan’s uncle is a well known film maker Naserhussian who paved way for Aamir khan's entry in to cinema as a child artist the popular movie "Yadoonkibarat ' which was directed by him. Aamir khan was initially married to Reenadutta who played a small role in his hit film "Qayamat se qayamat tak ", and has served as one of the producers for Khan's magnum opus "Lagaan " Shortly after which they got separated ending a fifteen year old marriage in 2001. They have two childrenJunaid khan and Iza khan. Amir khan got married to Kiran Rao shortly after, who had worked in lagan as a assistant director at that time. They have a son Azad Rao Khan who was born through surrogacy procedure.
Aamir khan made his acting debut at the age of eight in his uncle Nasirhussian's musical movie 'Yadoonkibarat ' which was followed up by a cameo in his fathers production 'Madhosh ' both of which were small cameos but the stage had been set for a entry into cinema by then .After completing his schooling from JB petit school, St Annes high school Bandra, which as he recalls was the most struggling days of his life due to the consecutive box office failures of his fathers productions leading to financial difficulty in the family back then .Khan after completing schooling was keen to make an attempt in cinema and thus Aamir khan had started working on an experimental 40 minute silent film at the age of sixteen named paranoia which was to be directed by his friend Aditya Bhattacharya with a shoe string budget !! Khan played the lead role along with Neetagupta and Victor Bannerjee in the silent feature also assisting the director for the movie !! paranoia was a life changing experience for the star which gave him the extra push to go out to seek a place for himself in the acting world !!After paranoia khan joined a theatre troop called Avantat where he was moulded into a serious actor and developed his acting skills to make it big in cinema one day , period !! . After doing some plays in Hindi and English, Khan discontinued his studies and ventured into main stream cinema by assisting his uncle Nasir Hussian in movies like Mansilmansil (1984) and Zabardast(1985) that was a crucial decision at that time due to his families financial problems so they wanted him to stay away from cinema.
Thus the year 1984 is a benchmark in Khans life as he had set out to make a name for himself in cinema to the total dismay of his family as they wanted a more 'steady career' for him !!Khan during that tenure acted in documentaries made by ftii students and got his very first break in holy (1984) which was a an experimental movie dealing with ragging malpractices in colleges in those days directed by Kethan Mehta which featured stalwarts like Naseerudin Shah, Ompuri playing key roles along with a character played by the Lagaan fame Ashutosh Gowariker !! Film Holi turned out to be a possible game changer for Khan even though it went on to be called as an insignificant character by the critics but on seeing his performance his uncle Nasir Hussian along with his son Mansoor cast him as independent hero in hussains next directorial "Qayamat se Qayamattak" (1988) opposite Juhi Chawla , the modern day adaption of Shakespeare famous “Romeo and Juliet“ , the tale of unfulfilled love had a lasting impact on the audience along with the boy next door charm that that the actor brought to the table ! Thus luckily Qayamat se Qayamat tak was a a welcome change for Khan and he also got commercial recognition and received a Film fare Award for best male lead that year !! Qayamat Se Qayamat tak, has since then attained a cult status among everyone proving to be the original ignition point of long and illustrious acting career for khan !! After this film Aamir khan pulled of a blinder by going against the conventional type cast tradition which was prevailing at that time by playing a man with a revenge in Aditya Bhattacharya’s Raakh(1989) a crime thriller, although it became a unsuccessful film the critical reception was very much positive and got him a special jury national award that year for his performances in both movies thus khan was slowly making his way through to the industry front by then 714 !!!After Raakh that year came' Love Love Love' yet another Film alongside Juhi Chawla but the movie failed to create a impact !
The year 1990 was a full on year for Aamir Khan as he had five releases lined up !! Movies like Awaal number, Tum Mere Ho, Deewana Mujh Sa Nahin and Jawani Zindabad all repeated the same Box office and critical response of his earlier movies but Dil (1990) directed by Indra Kumar was a path breaking step in khan's career till date as it was his very first blockbuster in his short career and proved to be catalytic in his career which was followed up by yet another hit in 'Dil Hai Ke Mangta Nahin' !!! But the name Aamir khan got popular among the masses in the year 1992 with the epic sports movie 'Jo Jeetha Wohi Sikhander ' which had created a space for Aamir khan the bankable actor along with the beginning of star phase at that point of time for him !!
Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke which came up next saw Aamir Khan venturing into screen writing too, that too was a super hit film.
By now Aamir khan had created a particular mould for himself which he manages to maintain to this very day !!After Rangeela khan went on to share screen space with the young Salman Khan although referred to affectionately as' Bhai ' by everyone nowadays, in' Andaz Apna Apna ' which too enjoys a cult status now !! That was the first official pairing of two of the khan's for the very first time in their long career’s who along with Shah Rukh Khan went on to be called the legendary Khan's of Bollywood who has ruled Hindi cinema for the past three decades !! Aamir khan started committing lesser projects from then on as he wanted to focus on quality of his movies rather than making mindless entertainers !!
1995 onwards has shown an a whopping upward swing in Aamir khans acting career where he went on to do only two films per year as a means to better his works !!
Raja Hindustani (1996) opposite Karishma Kapoor was highly praised by the audience and critics and Aamir khan got the Filmfare Best Actor Award after many unsuccessful nominations for the first time !! Raja Hindustani also broke many collection records and was declared the third highest grosser of the 90's by then ! But from there his films started gaining mediocre box office successes like his films Ghulam, Ishq and also Sarfarosh which were one of Khan's best performances till then !! Earth by Deepa Mehta, showed us what the actor is really capable of but eventually that movie had a poor box office run !! After Mela which was the first movie of Aamir Khan's career to be declared a "bomb" Khan came back with a stunner !!" Lagaan (2001) directed by Ashuatosh Gowarikar became a epic cinema experience for all and was something not seen before in Hindi cinema !! still considered to be khan's best work by many Lagaan revived a new phase in Hindi cinema as it went on to create history for all names associated with it !! Aamir khan played the role of the producer of the movie too under his newly formed production house "Aamir khan productions", Lagaan went on to bag many awards and recognition even got nominated for the "best foreign language film" of the 74 th academy awards !! still considered to be a modern day master piece Lagaan is a cinematic classic among all movie goers !! Aamir khan delivered a towering perfommance as the farmer who is to lead the indian team (a group of villagers who have not heard of the word cricket as of then ) in a cricket match against the British in pre independent India for the removal of heavy taxes imposed by the British government which turned out to be a a huge turning point in Khan’s career. From an academic perspective Aamir Khan's career along with Indian cinema history can be divided into two phases from then on , the pre -Lagaan era and the post Lagaan era !! As was the impact that the movie had in Indian cinema !!!after Lagaan Aamir khan joined hands with Farhan Akhtar in his flamboyant directorial debut "Dil Chahta Hai " alongside Akshay khanna and Saif Ali Khan in the latter part of 2001. Dil Chahta hai was only a moderate success at that point but ever since has been looked upon as a classy trendsetter coming of age movie that transformed Hindi cinema for the good !! Everything about the movie is praised even today especially the realistic portrayal of friendship between the lead actors and is considered a milestone in Bollywood !! After a fabulous comeback in 2001 through Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai Aamir khan took a break from cinema for 4 years after his divorce with Reena Dutta only to come back in 2005 with Ketan Mehtas Mangal Pande, the rising” reprising the role of Mangal Pandey .In 2006 Aamir Khan came up with Rang De Basanti and Fanaa both of which became instant classics !! In 2007 he wore the directors hat for the very first time with "Taare Zameen Par " written by Amol Gupte the second film by Aamir Khan productions which proved his expertise as a great director too which was a classic in the making ! Khan was widely accepted as a serious filmmaker and also went on to get the best director award that year for the film which dealt with the bonding between a teacher and a child with dyslexic syndrome ,where he played the teacher .Aamir khan is often accused of being too demanding and sort of a actor who can go to the edge to make a good movie not ready to make cinema just for the sake of it thus there has been a constant drop in the number of movies that he has done after the 1990's as he does not intend to make compromises when it comes to making cinema thus he lags far behind his contemporaries in the number of films due to his strict selection of scripts !! then after a small break he with came Ghajini where Khan was seen playing a role of a man with short term memory loss .which turned out to be a huge blockbuster. Aamir Khan in 2009 joined hands with Rajkumar Hirani to make 3 Idiots , a college based coming of age movie which opened to rave commercial and critical response and one of his finest works ,after which he did a special appearance for his wife`s directorial debut “Dhobi Ghat “ which turned out to be a critical hit and was screened at ,many film festivals worldwide to much acclaim, after which he played a cop in Reema Kagti’s crime thriller Talaash where he showcased a controlled performance where he underplayed a highly emotional police officer on a hunt for the truth with ease .Then he took a small gap preparing for his role of the main antagonist in the third instalment of the adventure film series Dhoom 3 in 2013 ,but the movie despite the huge hype failed to impress the fans of the franchise as in comparison to the previous outings ., .after which Amir khan joined hands yet again with Raj Kumar Hirani after their much acclaimed comedy three idiots and came up with PK , he appeared in the movie as an Alien from outside world who found it hard to live in our world , which become the highest grossing Bollywood movie of all time where he delivered a career best performance !! Khan is one of the few actors who has four of his movies in the list of highest grossing Bollywood movies like ghajini,3 idiots, Dhoom 3 and PK.
Aamir khan received his first Filmfare award for his subtle portrayal of Raj in “Qayamat se Qayamat tak “ in 1988, in the course of a film career spanning over twenty eight years Khan has received two Filmfare Awards with 16 nominations which itself is a testament of the genius of Khan as he has only done a handful of movies in his whole career spread out over two decades owing to his strict adherence to the quality of his filmography .Aamir khan was honoured with Padma Shri the fourth highest civilian Award provided by the Government of India for his priceless contribution to the arts and also given Padma Bhushan by the Central Government which is the third highest civilian honour of the government..Aamir khan is also a proud recipient of an honorary doctorate from Maualana Azad national Urdu university (MANNU) for his highly valued contribution to Indian cinema !!
Aamir khan although an actor by profession is a philanthropist and has always given out bold opinions on all social issues happening in the country ,even some of his remarked have clearly created political controversies in social media platforms . Aamir khan also appeared as the official creator and host of the show “satyameva jayate” on Star network which discussed about social issues happening around the country which had shed light to the dark unseen happenings in different parts of the nation .Khan has openly voiced his opinions on matters like intolerance in the media recently.
Aamir khan is an actor who has thrived for bringing about a change in the way Hindi films were made and during the entire course of his long career . Khan’s major focus have always been in bringing about diversity to his movies and Hindi cinema as a whole . Khan who played the lead in Lagaan had brought about an entire new approach to cinema which was foreign to Bollywood as of then .
