Besides acting in films Shahid Kapoor hosts award ceremonies and has featured in the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded in 2015. He supports many charitable organizations.
Shahid Kapoor was born in Delhi to actor Pankaj Kapur and actor and dancer Neelima Azeem. His parents divorced when he was just three years old and while his father shifted to Mumbai and married the actress Supriya Pathak, Shahid continued living in Delhi with his mother and maternal grandparents. His grand parents were journalists for the Russian magazine Sputnik . Though the parents had separated after divorce , his maternal grand father was in good relationship with his father Pankaj Kapur and every year on his birthday his father is said to have visited him in Delhi. When Shahid turned 10 years old his mother shifted to Mumbai with him to purse a career in acting. She married the actor Rajesh Khattar and he continued to live with his mother and her new husband till 2001 until they got separated. Shahid was raised by his mother and Rajesh Khattar therefore he has his last name as Khattar on his passport. He studied at Gyan Bharati School in Delhi and Rajhans Vidayalaya once he came to Mumbai. He later joined the Mithibai College in Mumbai.
Shahid Kapoor was interested in dancing from an early age and he had joined Shiamak Davar’s dance institute when he was 15. As a student he appeared in the background dance sequence from the film Dil to Pagal hai in 1997 and Taal in 1999 in which Shiamak Davar has served as the choreographer . During a stage show at the Davar’s Institute , his performance on the songs, ‘ Vogue’ and ‘ Golden Eye’ which received positive response from the audience. He was a good dancer and he became and instructor at the Institute. During this time he also did an audition for the Pepsi Commercial featuring with Shahrukh Khan , Kajol and Rani Mukherjee. He appeared in Television commercials for the brands, Kit Kat, Close-up and also started acting in the music videos . His first being with Kumar Sanu which included the band Aryans . He then took on the job as an assistant director to his father on the 1998 television series Mohandas B.A.L.L.B. Shahid Kapoor has got it all, a few super hit films in his bag, dancing talent, he has the acting prowess, Awards and is one of the most enticing and good looking actor of the Bollywood. He has dated a number of beautiful actresses in Bollywood but none have had a long term fruitful relationship. The few actresses he was involved in an affair were with Kareena Kapoor and Vidya Balan though the media also reports he has had affair with Amrita Rao, Sonakshi Sinha and Priyanka Chopra, but could have been a romantic involvement during his films with them even as a publicity stunt.
Shahid Kapoor made his film debut in 2003 in a leading role with Amrita Rao for the film Ishq Vishq a, sleeper hit that it was he won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. Following his debut , Shahid had got a featured in few more films like Fida in 2004 featuring him as a love struck student opposite Kareena Kapoor. The couple had managed to strike an onscreen chemistry between the two on the screen making them one of the most sought out pair in the Hindi Cinema like many other famous pairs audience expected a lot more from this pair for future films together. In the same year he also appeared in a romantic film Dil Maange More in which he has paired opposite to Soha Ali Khan, and his dancing skills were noticed in this film and was a déjà vu in the style of Shahrukh Khan’s acting and dancing skills . However both his releases were unsuccessful. The series of his flops continued in 2005 with films like the comedy one Deewane Huye Paagal, Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisa!, There’s something about Mary and Shikhar. He followed it with several other roles which were commercial failures before he had starred with Amrita Rao in Sooraj Barjatya’s top grossing family drama and one of the most popular film of that year 2006 in Vivah. Both the films opposite to Amrita Rao. Kapoor after the hit film Vivah found no success in the ensemble comedy film Fool & Final which proved to be have bombed at the Box Office, after the success of his film Jab We Met proved to be a top-grossing films of the year. His next release was with Vidya Balan in the romantic comedy Kismat Konnection in 2008. In the film Jab We Met, starring opposite to Kareena Kapoor, he earned nomination for the Filmfare Best Actor Award for portraying the troubled businessman was a romantic comedy film in 2007. Followed by his role of twin brothers in Vishal Bhardwaj’s thriller Kaminey in 2009. His roles in all the films that he has acted have been with emotional intensity to sustain the illusion of the characters he has played in each of his film. His final release of 2009 was with Rani Mukherji for Dil Bole Hadippa! A romantic comedy film which was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival . In 2010, Shahid Kapoor teamed in the comedy drama film Chance Pe Dance, followed by a supporting role Paathshaala, Badmaash Company, Milenge Milenge , Dil Maange More and Badmaash Company which was the only film that performed well after a series of flops. Mausam in 2011 starring with Sonam Kapoor which the actor considered as one of his dream projects. For this film he trained himself to fly the F-16 Fighting Falcon. The following year saw Shahid in another romantic role in Kunal Kohli’s Teri Meri Kahani in 2012 with Priyanka Chopra, followed by the comedy film Phata Poster Nikhla Hero. Shahid starred next in Prabhu Deva’s action film R. Rajkumar despite a negative critical reception the film earned a fairly high grossing becoming Kapoor’s highest grossing film release. Shahid Kapoor next reunited with director Vishal Bhardwaj for the film Haider in 2014 an adaptation of the tragedy Hamlet set during the Kashmir Conflict of 1995. He plays the role opposite Tabu and Shraddha Kapoor. Kapoor won several awards for his role in this film. In 2015 Shahid Kapoor acted in a romantic comedy film Shaandaar , a film by Vikas Bahl opposite Alia Bhat which was a commercial failure once again. After a couple of failures at the Box Office he starred in Raj Kumar Santoshi’s highest grossing film in the much acclaimed film Haider in 2016 in which he portrays the Hamlet character and he won the Filmfare Best Actor Award . His next powerful role was of a drug abused singer in the crime film Udta Punjab again in the 2016 and the year saw the actor in the limelight. As despite Shahid Kapoor being one of the most attractive celebrities and a popular actor, he has had a fluctuating career .
