Adalat released in 1976 was an Hindi Action Drama directed by Narendra Bedi. In this film he essayed a double role for the first time of a father and son. He starred opposite to Waheeda Rehman who plays the role of his wife and Neetu Singh as the son’s lover.
The story as it goes forward Waheeda Rehman has essayed both her roles as the wife of the father and mother to the son beautifully. The film went on to become famous. It also had Kader Khan in an important role. The music for the film was rendered by Kalyanji Anandji.
The story goes as this that Dharam Chand (Amitabh Bachchan) called as Dharma is a simple village farmer and is happy and excited when his wife Radha gives birth to a son whom he names Raja. Once he saves the life of three people, Ajit, Sujit and Suresh when they were attacked by a tiger. In return they offer him a job in Bombay. The innocent farmer Dharma realizes that there is no future for him or his son in the poor village he decides to take up their offer. He starts work for them very diligently and with honesty. But he falls prey to their cunningness. They trick him to become the owner of a warehouse where they were dealing in drugs. Since the ware house was in his name, he gets implicated falsely. A simple villager does not understand the legalities. He is sentenced to prison.
The film is about the hardships his family faces and the ordeal of him dealing with his life post his sentence. The film shows a strong character in Dharma essayed by Amitabh Bachchan. He is no more the innocent man he was and understands the society is ruthless and he is a changed man. The film shows his transition from a simpleton to a shrewd man who takes his revenge on his enemies who got him into that plight.
The 1980 film is a remake of Telugu film and was also made in Malayalam. In this film Amitabh Bachchan did the role very differently and experimented on the choice of the film. But the film went on to become a super hit. This is the Adalat of Amitabh Bachchan.
