It is true that Film Stars are a big craze among the people and it is most easy for the film stars to win elections opposite any top or veteran politicians as Indian people lack political knowledge. Hence they vote for film stars caring little will the film star serve them!!! Hence it is observed that many film stars who won the election on their popularity later quit politics. Some frustrated by the corruption and unjust rules of politics while some who could not do justice as MP.
Among such film stars the actor who tops the list is Star of the Millennium and the heartthrob of Millions Amitabh Bachchan, who joined Politics on the insistence of his childhood friend Rajiv Gandhi in 1984. Interestingly he won the Allahabad seat on Congress ticket with highest victory margin opposite political wizard H. N. Bahuguna, the Ex-Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. However, after just 3 years Bachchan was bored by the dirty politics and quit it calling Politics as a ‘Filthy Gutter’!!
After the exit of Amitabh Bachchan, Rajiv Gandhi invited Rajesh Khanna, the official First Superstar of Bollywood. In 1991, Rajesh Khanna fought the New Delhi seat on Congress ticket against BJP Stalwart Leader L.K.Advani and had a stiff battle. However, Rajesh Khanna lost the election by a small margin of 1589 votes. However, Rajesh Khanna was upset by the counting of votes and demanded a re-poll. Thus in the re-poll Rajesh Khanna won the seat opposite actor Shatrughan Sinha by a huge margin of 25,000 votes. Rajesh Khanna also won the 1996 Lok Sabha elections but later quit politics for personal reasons.
Action King, Dharmendra popularly called He-Man of Bollywood like his success stunt in Bollywood continued his sway in politics too in 2004. He joined BJP and won from the Bikaner seat in Rajasthan. He was MP from 2004 to 2009. However he hardly ever visited Parliament seasons and spent his time in farm work or in film shoots. Hence he quit politics.
Like Dharmendra, Dancing Sensation, Govinda was a one election wonder. In 2014, Govinda joined the Congress Party and defeated, BJP top leader Ram Naik, from Mumbai North. However, he quit politics as people criticized him for not living up to the promises he made with people.
Many stars who failed to make it big in politics are Bollywood’s controversial bold and blunt actress Rakhi Sawant, Nagma, Gul Panag, Nafisa Ali, Aprajita Mohanty, Navneet Kaur Rana. In the male category Marathi film actor and director of repute Mahesh Manjrekar, hit film Umrao Jaan director Muzaffar Ali, Bollywood comedian Javed Jaffrey, TV anchor and actor Shekhar Suman, Bhojpuri superstar Ravi Kishan, Music director Bappi Lahiri, etc lost Lok Sabha election and could not make it to the Lok Sabha.
