Daag, Kabhie Kabhie, Kaala Patthar, Silsila, Chandni, Mashaal, Lamhe, Darr, the list goes on…Well, the man who made these memorable hit films is Yash Chopra, the exceptionally brilliant filmmaker who also has the distinction of directing some ‘Biggest’ hit films of Indian cinema like Waqt, Deewaar, Trishul, Ittefaq etc.
Born in 1932, in Jullundur, Punjab, Yash Chopra did his graduation in Sanskrit, Physics, and Mathematics. But within his heart, he always dreamt of directing movies. Hence, no sooner, he completed his studies he caught the Mumbai train and joined as an assistant director under his illustrious brother, B.R. Chopra, who was then directing Gumraah. Soon Yash Chopra learned the tricks of the trade. Next, he stunned his brother with a ‘mature’ script of Dhool Ka Phool (1959) which told the story of an unmarried woman betrayed by her lover and the subsequent fate of their illegitimate child. It was a bold subject, yet, Yash Chopra, insisted his brother to trust him and give him the reins of direction. A shaky B.R.Chopra first resisted but later looking at Yash‘s confidence, he gave the nod. The result, the movie was a super-duper hit and Yash won high acclaims both from the masses and critics alike.
After Dhool ka Phool, Yash Chopra took the Indian Film Industry by storm with India’s First Multi-Star film Waqt (1965). The film was not only a huge hit but fetched Yash Chopra the Best Director Filmfare Award thus establishing Yash Chopra as a director-par-excellence. To add ice to cream, Yash Chopra won his second Filmfare Best Director for his next film Ittefaq (1969) the suspense thriller that was a song less film in an era when Music ruled Bollywood. Despite no songs, the edge of the seat thrilling direction made the film super hit thus endorsing his name in the list of great film directors.
Till the 70’s Yash Chopra was under the shadow of his elder brother B.R.Chopra hence after the success of Ittefaq he decided to spread his wings and established Yash Raj Films with the super hit film Daag (1973). Interestingly, in his debut film too, Yash Chopra won the Filmfare Best Director Award.
After this Yash Chopra never looked back and gave several hit films under YRF like Kabhi Kabhie, Silsila, Chandni, Lamhe, Darr, Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Veer-Zaara. Besides, Yash Chopra also directed few films outside his banner for top film producers like Deewaar, Trishul etc.
