Debashree has won more than 40 awards which consists of a National Award, 3 BFJA awards, 5 Kalakar awards and Anandlok to name a few. She is a producer, choreographer & Motivator of the Natraj Dance Troupe, also founder of Debashree Roy Foundation (A nonprofit organization for the cause of stray animals. She has been a member of the Legislative Assembly from All India Trinamool Congress, contested the West Bengal Elections against CPI(M) Candidate and former Minister Kanti Ganguly from Raidighi.

 

Debashree was married to Prosanjit who was her childhood friend but later divorced. She had an affair with the famous cricketer Sandeep Patil. Rani Mukherjee (Actress) is her niece from the maternal side.

Debashree is an actress, Dancer, Politician & Animal Activist. She has worked in Hindi, Bengali and Tamil film (she was known as Chintamani there). Her first film was in Bengali called Pagal Thakur directed by Hiranmoy Sen which was a devotional film and acted as an infant in the role of Ramakrishna Paramhansa. Her adult role was in Arabinda Mukhopadhyay’s Bengali film ‘Nadi Theke Sagare’ (1978) but got recognition with Aparna Sen’s 36 Chowringhee lane (1981), Kanak Mishra’s Jiyo To Aise Jiyo (1981) which was a Rajshri Production movie. Debashree has acted in many other Hindi films like Bura Aadmi (1982), Justice Chaudhury (1983), Kabhi Ajnabi (1985), Phulwari (1984), Pyar Ka Sawan (1989). Her Bengali film Troyee was a major success at the Box Office.

Debashree has done a lot of successful Bengali films such as Bhalobasa Bhalobasa (1985), Chokher Aloy (1989, Jhankar (1989), Ahankar (1991) & Yuddha (2005).

She entered the Television scene with’ Dena Paona’ followed by Loohakapat, Ratnadeep, Nagarpare, Roopnagar and Biraj Bou. B. R Chopra signed her for his serial the famous Mahabharat where she played the role of Satyavati. There was a controversy about her role in Samarpan which was aired on Zee Television.

Debashree has performed on stage with the troupe Natraj with ‘Vasavdatta’ and has attempted many Art of Folk dances such as Swapner Sandhane, was applauded for her performance in ‘Bichitro’ abroad, has choreographed most of her dance numbers.

Her most memorable choreography was with ‘Aar Kato Raat Eka Thakbo’ from Chokher Aloy. Debashree’s favourite actors are Mithun Chakraborty, Jaya Bachchan & Rekha. She loves reading, Travelling, writing and cooking.
