“83” (2021) is a Hindi-language biographical sports drama film by Kabir Khan, tracing one of the most legendary moments in the history of Indian sports: the 1983 Cricket World Cup triumph. Ranveer Singh plays the title role of Kapil Dev in the film, with Deepika Padukone, Jiiva, Harrdy Sandhu, Pankaj Tripathi, and Tahir Raj playing supporting roles. The movie follows the underdog tale of the Indian cricket team as they transform from being seen as outsiders to winning the prized World Cup.

The Indian team reached England for the 1983 Cricket World Cup. The two-time world champions, West Indies, dominate the spotlight, and the Indian team is faced with doubt and negative expectations by the public and cricket authorities. In spite of disappointing performances during warm-up games, Kapil Dev is convinced and openly declares their intention of winning the championship.

India surprised all by winning their first match against the West Indies with Yashpal Sharma's gritty 89. They keep astounding critics with another victory against Zimbabwe, though their form sagged later with heavy defeats against Australia and the West Indies. Sunil Gavaskar's and Dilip Vengsarkar's injuries further jeopardize their campaign. Dev saves the day in an instance of need with a legendary 175* against Zimbabwe, restoring hopes and confidence.

The team finds its shape again, defeating Australia and reaching the semi-finals. In the match against England, an all-round performance by Mohinder Amarnath leads India to the finals. In the Lord's final, India posts a humble total of 183 runs. The bowling, spearheaded by Amarnath, puts up a marvellous performance by taking out the strong West Indies team. India wins the World Cup title when Amarnath takes the last wicket.

“83” is not just a sports movie; it's a salute to faith, leadership, and national pride. With powerful performances and emotional resonance, particularly from Ranveer Singh, the film immortalizes the victory that revolutionized Indian cricket forever.
