“Pizhai” is a 2020 Tamil-language children's drama film. It was written and directed by Rajavel Krishna in his directorial debut. The movie features Ramesh, Appa Nasath, and Gokul in the lead, along with other notable actors like Velmurugan, Mime Gopi, George Maryan, and Kalloori Vinoth.
Three of these boys are Vedi, Kodi, and Mayilu, who loathe studying and desire a stimulating life outside of their village. Tired of their parents nagging them endlessly, the boys decide to abscond from their homes in search of adventure and freedom.
As they arrive in the world, their elation soon turns into cruel reality. They have no food and no money and attempt to survive. A strange man approaches them and offers them a job, and they accept it, believing that they have found their answer. But they find out they are being exploited and treated badly. They try desperately to escape, but in the commotion, they lose Mayilu.
Heartbroken and frightened, Vedi and Kodi set out looking for their friend everywhere and anywhere. Along the way, they encounter hunger, fear, and danger and are taught personal lessons about their worth for home, family, and school. On the other hand, families worry and yearn to search for their whereabouts by involving police services.
Eventually, the police locate Vedi and Kodi and bring them back home. However, when asked about Mayilu's whereabouts, they discover the tragic truth; Mayilu has lost his life. The boys return home with deep regret, realizing that their decision to run away has cost them dearly.
“Pizhai” is a very moving story of the mistakes made during childhood, struggles to survive, and education as well as family. It becomes a lesson of how bad the outside world is and sometimes how the greatest adventures can have the heaviest prices.
