Perumal, while trying to save them as they were being chased by a mob, suffered an injury which Comrade KK treated, but at the price of teaching him a politics that inspired his struggle against injustice. Perumal formed a workers' union at the Mahalakshmi Sugar Factory and even married the owner's daughter, Mahalakshmi.
After the murder of KK, Perumal formed the armed group Makkal Padai. The Makkal Padai struggled for workers' rights but was banned and became an underground group. Belonging to the present, they ambush and free Perumal from a police convoy. Soon after, there is a violent clash between the police and the Makkal Padai. Police officer Ragavendar went rogue and many soldiers lost their lives. Perumal was injured and decided to surrender to protect his friends, but was fatally shot by SI Amudan. On their way back, Kumaresan, who was filled with rage, drove the jeep straight into a wreck and vanished into a jungle area. There, he wrote to his mother, explaining that if he did not see her again, he was dead, doing something for someone.
Viduthalai: Part 2 continues the powerful storytelling of its hero, adapted from Jayamohan's short story, Thunaivan, as a sequel to Viduthalai: Part 1 (2023). This is more than another crime thriller. This provides further possibilities, and further layers of contemplation on the themes of power, freedom and resistance. It does not hold back in terms of its chosen tough emotional tone, and as it ties up, whatever those threads that linger may be, and emotionally impacts its audience along the way with whatever resolution it provides, it will satisfy its audience. This ambitious project was presented as a two-part screening at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, January 2024.
