At the reopening night screening of the 1981 classic Umrao Jaan, Bollywood icon Rekha made jaws drop when she made her entrance in an outfit replicating that of her cinematic darling courtesan-poetess Amiran.
Dripping in a flamboyant ivory-and-gold lehenga from Manish Malhotra, paired with a Banarasi dupatta, mogra flowers, and traditional jewelry worn by the goddess herself, Rekha immediately conjured the spirit of her beloved character Rekha from Umrao Jaan.
Taking place in Mumbai, the occasion brought A-list luminaries such as Aamir Khan, Hema Malini, AR Rahman, Banita Sandhu ,Tabu, Khushi Kapoor and Alia Bhatt on the guestlist. One of the highlights of the evening was Rekha’s playful jive with longtime friend Anil Kapoor that had the crowd roaring and grinning ear to ear.
Rekha followed up her embrace and kiss on the cheek with AR Rahman with some prime “Raya” mugging for photographers, and looked pretty much like the original Bollywood diva unicorn she is in all her classic beauty.
The digitally remastered 4K version of Umrao Jaan is being shown as part of PVR INOX’s “Timeless Classics” series, which is intended to re-introduce classic films to new audiences.
The film, famous for Rekha’s National Award winning performance, Khayyam’s haunting, unforgettable music and all around cinematic excellence, returns to cinemas June 27—bringing a wave of nostalgia, beauty and excellence that still captivates today.
