Marathi filmmaker Nagraj Manjule along with producer Riteish Deshmukh had announced their ambitious magnum opus trilogy on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 2019. The film was to release by 2021 but the film never went on floors. This is mainly due to the pandemic that delayed things considerably and the schedule got disrupted. The film is supposed to be a PAN India film to be released in multiple languages.

Speaking about his trilogy, the Sairat director said, “Our schedule got haywire because of the pandemic. We lost two years because of that so naturally we could not take it on floors. But it isn't that the movie is shelved. It is a project I am extremely passionate about and once everything falls into place, you will know.”

The Fandry director’s upcoming film on Shivaji Maharaj will be one of his biggest productions till date. Talking about it He added, “It is a historical, but at the end of the day, we are making a film so the rules of movie making won't change, only the subject will. Of course it will come with its own challenges because of the nature of the film. "Even when I was a kid, I would think how brilliant a film on Shivaji Maharaj would be. I had seen a couple of films on him and wanted to make one myself, so this is a dream project.”
Manjule’s last release was his Bollywood debut film Jhund starring Amitabh Bachchan in the lead.
