When it comes to gender roles we have too many expectations from the brother or the man of the house. The burden of keeping the family flag high lies on the brother’s but its about time we redefine the roles and Bollywood is doing it in the films already. The most recent example to state is Huma Qureshi and Saqeeb Salim’s Dobaara which was released early this year . A supernatural thriller film which had the brother and sister in the lead and together they go into the depth of the film discovering their past and solving the mystery that was worrying them both for a long time.
In Dil Dhadakne Do released in 2015 the multi star cast film was interesting film that showed the changing dynamics of a brother-sister relationship essayed by Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh as siblings. The shift was Priyanka a business woman a role away from being a distress woman saved by the brother.
Gone are the days when films had the teary eyed dialogues of Pyaari Behena or Dulara Bhaiya and the story went by the brother avenging his sister being raped or murdered or done wrong by the villains. Now its more of equality between the two. Gender doesn’t really matter any more.
The most recent was also Kai Po Che and M S Dhoni: The Untold Story both films with Sushant Singh Rajput who came up with a new side to a role of a brother in the film. The actor admitted that right from riding a bike to playing cricket his four sisters in his real life were instrumental and his change of personality, he owes it to them. He believes sisters are no less than heroes themselves. A mindset that needs to be changed in the Indian society that girls are equal to boys.
There are films made on the ‘ Bade Bhaiya’ who will lead the way and be the benevolent like in the film Prem Ratan Dhan Payo or Shah Rukh Khan in the film Josh… But it’s the brothers who are taking a step back to let the sisters do what is right for them.In film like My Brother Nikhil. With Sanjay Suri and Juhi Chawla as siblings they were a source of strength to each other and a guiding force which in turn has helped them to understand the value as individuals who have separate choice or desires There were many more films made on the brother sister relationships that are more glossier now throws a new light and go beyond the. Clichés. Sisters are now educated in the films too. Filmmakers explore new aspects that is not by going the traditional way and that a sister in a film is also capable as much as her brother. Its only for the society to accept the new changes and Bollywood is trying its best to portray a new brother – sister relationship on equality… and not weigh the weaker sex down with the notion Log Kya Kahenge.!
