Aamir Khan’s ‘3 Idiot’ Inspired Several Students To Choose Careers Of Their Interest! – PART 4

Recent times the film that has played a key role in bringing a drastic change among parents regarding the choice of their children career is unarguably Aamir Khan‘s super-hit film 3 Idiots. Based on the true story of a Sonam Wangchuk, a real-life engineer-turned-innovator and education, Aamir Khan played Sonam Wangchuk’s character as Phunsukh Wangdu in 3 Idiots. Though the name was ‘weird’ and there were objections among the production members but Aamir was sure of its success and eventually people loved Phunsukh Wangdu so much that the film became the highest grosser in India and the first film to garner a whopping business of Rs 200 crore at box-office!! The film was not only appreciated in India but was loved by the global audience.

 

So who is Sonam Wangchuk? Well, Sonam Wangchuk was born to poor parents in the Leh district of Jammu and Kashmir. Due to lack of school in his village, he joined the school at the age of 9 but thanks to his brilliance he did B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Srinagar. However, instead of doing a job and making money, he set up a radical school in Ladakh called Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL).

 

The highlight of SECMOL School is that it gives preference to those students who’ve failed in class X Board Examination. Students are taught the art of Skill Education. Sonam Wangchuk encourages his students to be job-makers rather than job-seekers!!! SECMOL is the only one of its kind school anywhere in the country. Recently Sonam Wangchuk won the prestigious Rolex Award for his Innovative school.

 

Back to 3 Idiots, the most important think about the film is that it brilliantly and in an entertaining style brought home the concept that it is useless to be part of a rat race. The competition among students in India to score above 90% and chase careers which many do not have interest ultimately ruins a persons’ career.

 

The film emphasized on to chase excellence and a career which gave solace to heart and soul. In the film, Rancho (Aamir Khan) repeatedly utters this mantra – Don’t chase success, chase excellence. True, in India, everybody wants to become an engineer or doctor or MBA. Students rarely think about their interests, and even if they think, their parents pose as obstacles and force them to follow the rat race. This results in tragic ends as the movie depicted a student committing suicide. Hence the film propagates to chase a career that students love and interestingly after the release of the film many students took the daring decision to choose careers of their choice and interestingly parents supported.
