Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’ Becomes India’s First Film To Create Rs 2000 Crore Club

With Ghajini, Aamir Khan started the trend of Rs 100 Crore Club in 2008. Further, in 2009, Aamir made another milestone of starting Rs 200 Crore Club with his film 3 Idiots! Again in 2015, Aamir began a new club of Rs 500 Crore with the smashing success of Dhoom 3 and in 2016 Aamir Khan did the unbelievable of entering the elusive Rs 2000 Crore Club with his film Dangal becoming India’s First Film to create Rs 2000 Crore Club!! In 2017, International magazine Forbes declared Dangal to have a net business of over Rs 2000 Crore worldwide!!
What is interesting is that when SS Rajamouli‘s magnum opus film Baahubali 2: The Conclusion created the stunning record of an incredible Rs 1,810 Crore, Bollywood never thought it could ever come close to such a massive collection. But kudos to Aamir Khan and his intelligence in marketing that he left behind Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and emerged a winner!
Dangal was released in an estimated 4,300 screens in India and 1,000 screens internationally. To win the South territory, the film was dubbed as Yuddham and released simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu. Further, the state government of 6 states gave Tax-Free status to film. Due to affordable ticket rates and the craze to watch an Aamir Khan film, the film did overwhelming business in these 6 states Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, and Madhya Pradesh
In addition, Aamir Khan in his trademark style started the film’s publicity before its release giving interviews about his magical transformation from 70 kg to 90 kg and vice versa! The film thus created curiosity to watch Aamir Khan in a new look of a plump and aged father of 4 daughters. The other plus point of the film was that it promoted the popular concept of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao‘. Hence the film was seen by women in large number and the film became a hit before its release! According to the popular website BookMyShow, the online ticketing platform, the film created a record of selling the fastest one million tickets before the release.
In its first week, Dangal collected Rs 511 crore in India and Rs 205 crore overseas. Later it collected 345 crores. Further, the movie kept doing business until 11 weeks. In its second release at China and Taiwan, the movie became an instant hit. The film was released at 9000 plus screen in China and earned over Rs 1400 Crore thus became highest-grossing Indian film worldwide with a gross income of Rs 2,000 crore.
