Are Marathi Films Getting Suppressed?

National Award-winning director Bhaurao Karhade is out in the media and public with tears and folded hands, expressing his disappointment and grief. On April 28, filmmaker Bhaurao Karhade released his Marathi-language film, TDM, in theaters. The movie explores rural Maharashtra’s realities through the story of Babu and Neelam, portrayed by Pruthviraj Thorat and Kalindi Nistane. Produced by Chitraksha Films in association with Smile Stone Studio and distributed by UFO Moviez.

After its successful opening on April 28th, the film ran in theaters for 2–3 days with an overwhelming response from the audience. Later on the 1st of May, when director Bhaurao Karhade decided to go and interact with his audience to get their valuable feedback, he found something that turned his world upside down.The theater owner told Bhaurao Karhade that TDM’s upcoming shows had been canceled due to external pressure, without giving a valid reason, despite the film’s good run and positive audience response.

The Struggle is Real

The incident has raised alarms, suggesting Marathi films are being pushed aside. A film worth watching by the audience is not getting its deserving number of screens in theaters. Is this a strangling of the Marathi industry?

Bhaurao Karhade faced a grievance and decided to withdraw his film from theaters.

He expressed disappointment, saying, “Canceling shows when people want to watch isn’t fair.” He added that he wouldn’t make films in the future due to this unfairness.

This incident raised questions about politics, favoritism, and injustice in the industry. Who is to blame? The Maharashtra government for not supporting regional cinema? The native audience for preferring Bollywood films? Or distributors for not giving the film enough screens?
