In the Hindi Film Industry there are lot of character artists who are paid more than the Hero or the main protagonist. One such character star is comedian Mehmood. Just the mention of his name in the cast was good enough for the film to be a hit and the audiences would love to see the films. Similarly, there are few more actors like Ashok Kumar, Pran, or Paresh Rawal who may not have been in the lead role but with them in the star cast the film would get popularity and good response from the viewers.


Mehmood in the 60s and 70’s did lot of such films where he earned more than the hero. Films like Padosan, Bombay to Goa, Pyar Kiye Ja and many others in which Mehmood’s role stands out. Even though the actor may not have any lead heroine with him and the film had the main hero like Sunil Dutt in the lead in Padosan and Amitabh Bachchan in Bombay to Goa, it was Mehmood who stole the limelight.



Mehmood was so popular in the industry that producers would sign him in the film as the financers upon hearing his name in the film, would gladly finance and also because his films were always super hit films.


You would be surprised to know that in the film ‘ Pyar Kiye Ja’ Shashi Kapoor and Kishor Kumar were in the lead roles . Despite Mehmood being in the parallel roles on the screen still demanded more than both the leading actors. The film is famous for Mehmood’s role It. In this film Mehmood has become a film producer and he narrates a horror story. His expressions while narrating the story is still very popular and instantly brings humor and smiles among the people.  It is considered as one of the most hilarious scenes of the Hindi films.


In Main Sunder Hoon, the leading cast is Biswajeet. But for this film Biswajeet was paid only Rs. 2 lakhs while Mehmood received Rs. 8 lakhs those days. The film had released in 1972 and went on to be a super hit film. That’s not all, Mehmood also influenced and some of the leading actors like Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Shashhi Kapoor, Manoj Kumar to name a few had no clue of acting in their films but it was only because of Mehmood’ name in the star cast the films did well and these actors then became the superstars for giving hit films.
