Soora Samhaaram comes in the form of a thriller film from 1988, directed by Chitra Lakshmanan. It stars Kamal Haasan, Nirosha, Nizhalgal Ravi and Pallavi. The movie centres on Pandian, an honest cop hell-bent on taking down a drug kingpin who murdered his best friend, Arun. His mission soon becomes a hellish nightmare when he is overtaken by the criminal organisation and subjected to a downward spiral of drug addiction, pushing him to the limit with a willpower and desire to seek justice.
Athi Veerapandiyan and Arun shouldn’t have to be a pair of police bros, fighting crime together, to win the approval of audiences. Arun’s sister, Divya, is addicted to drugs, and even though Arun tries to intervene and get her off the drugs, she just can’t quit. One day, with no other options, Arun locks her in a room to go cold turkey, but unfortunately, she dies during withdrawal. Heartbroken and angry, Arun resolves to kill Mohandas, the head of the mafia. Yet, before he can move, Mohandas kills Arun in an airport toilet. A young boy, Sudha’s brother, sees the murder but is afraid to come forward.
Newly appointed lead investigator Pandian suspects Sudha and her brother have information, but Sudha won’t cooperate due to fear of persecution. Eventually, Madhuri, one of her best friends since childhood, persuades her to go public and aid the investigation. Just as good things are starting to happen, Mohandas’s henchmen grab Pandian and pump him full of drugs, making him dependent on them. Just as Pandian overcomes his addiction, he, too, fights to take back control of his life and deliver Mohandas to justice, eventually succeeding in avenging Arun’s death and dismantling the drug mafia, restoring peace and hope to the community.
Soora Samhaaram is a high-octane action thriller starring Kamal Haasan, Nirosha, Nizhalgal Ravi, Pallavi. Loyalty, sacrifice and justice are the guiding principles throughout the film as it takes us into the treacherous realm of addiction and drugs. Breathtaking performances and shocking plot turns underscore the emotional and physical duels the heroes wrestle with, as they force the blood-dripping, loathsome drug kingpin down to earth, for a nasty and assassin-like, white-knuckle film that is both hypnotic and insistent, action-filled adventure.
