Aaragan (2024)

Aaragan" is a Tamil fantasy thriller of 2024 directed and penned by Arun KR, produced by Michael Thangadurai and Kavipriya Manoharan. The film combines mystery, horror, and folklore, a chilling story about black magic and immortality. The movie begins with an animated prologue linking the myth of Ilanthiraiyan, a pure young man who rescues a saint from the jaws of a fatal snakebite. He receives a powerful boon for everlasting youth at a horrifying price. In the modern age, we have "Saravanan" (Michael Thangadurai) and "Magizhai Nila" (Kavipriya Manoharan), a pair of love-struck youth, planning for the future. Magizhai gets employed as a caretaker by an elderly woman, "Valarmathi" (Sri Ranjani), in a remote hill station. The last night she is in the town, she enjoys a sultry night with Saravanan not knowing the atrocities that await her. In the remote bungalow, Magizhai starts feeling odd things. There is no signal on her phone and the atmosphere is filled with an eerie silence. She feels something is following her, and her nightmares become intense. She learns that she is pregnant as days go by, but the happiness is short-lived when she finds a pregnant woman (Kalai Rani) tied in the house. The horror of the truth is revealed; Saravanan is really Ilanthiraiyan, preserved young all these years by deeds of devilish rituals. As a prerequisite to stay young, he has to suck the life out of pregnant women in a horrific sacrifice. Magizhai knows she is his next victim. Cornered and desperate, she will have to battle to escape before falling into the hands of his blood-curdling secret. While "Aaragan" has an interesting premise, the film falters on a muddled narrative and not enough sound design to render crucial conversations indecipherable. While even the dark visuals and eerie tone within the film work, it is the muddled plot that keeps viewers wondering what the film will ultimately be. Its combination of horror and mythology provides a new twist to the traditional romance of love, betrayal, and the cost of immortality.
