His mother passes away gradually, and while Santhanam struggles with loans to cover their needs, his siblings are still in school. He grows in love, but his money issues cause his girlfriend to abandon him. Santhanam provides dowry despite warning against it to help oversee his sister's marriage.
Desperate, he marries for money only to be duped. Even his brother, currently employed, turns selfish as his responsibilities increase. Santhanam finds himself in a slum with his wife and child after losing his job. He gradually starts writing, and his wife keeps the family while he rebuilds his life. Just as he finds success with his first book, death strikes, and a fire kills his wife. Insurance money and support from a devoted buddy helped Santhanam to become a noted author and publisher. He feels hollow, looking back on his wife's love, and the flimsy support of his siblings before dying peacefully despite riches, and celebrity.
