“Agent” (2023) is a Telugu-language spy action film directed by Surender Reddy and produced under AK Entertainments by its producers, Anil Sunkara and Rambrahmam Sunkara.
The protagonist of the story is Akhil Akkineni as a young man aspiring to become RAW agent, called Ramakrishna; Mammootty plays Mahadev, also known as RAW head, quite ruthless and in the process described as "Devil" owing to his non-emotional and clinically calculated approach during missions.
Ramakrishna, a man who was ordinary yet gifted, longs to serve RAW, India's most elite intelligence agency. Given a chance to serve, he finds himself deep into a very crucial mission in order to identify and eliminate the nefarious terrorist outfit threatening the nation's security. In this process, however, he unravels a lot of truths about the agency, its bosses, and even his past.
The movie is filled with heavy action sequences, stylish cinematography, and over-the-top performances. Mammootty is effective in commanding a presence, which is effortless to convey the no-nonsense intelligence chief. Akhil Akkineni is energetic enough to keep the action going, but the predictable plot and lack of emotional depth leave much to be desired.
“Agent” failed to live up to expectations at the box office with mixed to negative reviews, the screenplay weak and over-the-top action. While it had a good premise and great action that is visually stunning, it still lacks the depth for a true thriller spy film.
Released in theatres on April 28, 2023, “Agent” can be streamed at present. If action-packed spy movies are something of your choice, this movie will work. Still, Agent has a split audience because its action is styled well and so is the acting. The audience will either praise or hate the spy genre because it does not add up in every respect.
It will appeal to viewers who want action, along with a dash of espionage.
