“Akkaran” is a 2024 Tamil thriller crime suspense movie directed and written by Arun K. Prasad and produced by KKD under Kundram Production. It is a movie about a quest for justice and truth by the father after the tragic killing of his daughter.

Living in Madurai with his two daughters “Devi” (Venba) and “Priya” (Priyadarshini), “Veerapandi” (MS Bhaskar) is an average man. Priya, a talented student preparing for her NEET exams, inexplicably leaves following a little argument at her coaching center. Soon, Veerapandi’s world shatters when he discovers that Priya has been brutally murdered. Devastated and furious, he discovers that the coaching center is part of a corrupt scam, run by Arjun and Selvam. Priya, who has discovered their deception, is a victim of their power.

Since the police would not want to take action against influential individuals, Veerapandi takes matters into his own hands. The film turns into an interrogation thriller where he apprehends Arjun and Selvam and makes them confess. However, their statements keep varying and they experience flashbacks of the offense repeatedly. Truth is veiled beneath a thickness of lie and deceit, and Veerapandi struggles to distinguish the facts from the fabric.

Although the film attempts to be a high-octane revenge thriller, it is clichéd in its tropes. The murder plot is telegraphed, and the flashbacks are unnecessary, which slows the film. The setup; a crime backed by a politician, a hapless victim, and a revengeful father; feels too contrived. Priya's role of secretly recording evidence and going against powerful men appears unrealistic, so her death comes across as forced.

MS Bhaskar delivers a rugged performance, especially in the heated interrogation scenes, but his crying scenes lack impact. Karthik Chandrasekar as Selvam adds depth to the character though he is wasted for a considerable portion of screen space.

As the story unfolds to a climactic turn, the film raises a pertinent question; how far will one go for justice when the law fails to deliver?
