“Aneethi” (2023) is a Tamil psychological romantic thriller film directed by Vasanthabalan and features Arjun Das and Dushara Vijayan in pivotal roles. The movie depicts mental illness, love, trauma, and revenge in the life of its tormented hero

The film begins with Thirumeni (Arjun Das) entering a house with a package, looking for Subbu (Dushara). A few years ago: "Thiru" is a food delivery boy who battles a secret obsessive-compulsive disorder and flashbacks memories of sinister past. He finds it difficult to cope with everyday life, is socially isolated, and is undergoing therapy. One day, while on a food delivery, he meets "Subbu," a tender maid. Slowly, they fall in love. Thiru becomes emotionally attached to her and fiercely protective, especially after witnessing the abuse Subbu faces at her employer Mangayarkarasi’s house.

When Mangayarkarasi is subsequently discovered dead, suspicion is cast on Thiru and Subbu. In an attempt to conceal the death and out of desperation, they dispose of the body, and a series of events involving deception, arrests, and brutal fights ensues. As the investigation becomes more intense, Subbu starts doubting Thiru's sanity. He is brutally tortured by the police, and we see that his childhood trauma, particularly the tragic loss of his father: still haunts him deeply. His breakdowns are found to be based on injustice and emotional suffering.

Later, a suicide letter by Mangayarkarasi exonerates Thiru and Subbu of murder. But by then, Thiru's mind had broken down. Betrayed, homeless, and heartbroken, he starts a cycle of savage revenge. He murders those who betrayed Subbu and brutally eliminates the ones who attempted to dominate her.

"Aneethi" is a tightly coiled psychological thriller that explores the mind of a fractured man. Arjun Das gives a gritty performance as Thiru. Romance and thriller are blended with emotional heft, and the film sheds light on how unresolved trauma can lead to violence. Vasanthabalan's narration is tautly suspenseful till the climax, and Aneethi becomes a haunting, engrossing watch.
