Arangetram (2023)

Arangetram (1973) is a psychological family drama under the direction of K. Balachander. It features Prameela, S. V. Subbaiah, Sivakumar, Sasikumar and Kamal Haasan. The film follows Lalitha, a strong-willed young woman, as she battles poverty, family burdens, and exploitation to support her ungrateful family. Ramu Shastrigal, a strict and poor Brahmin priest, lives with his wife Visalam and their eight children. His stubborn nature causes problems for the struggling family. Things get worse when his sister and niece come to stay. Lalitha, his eldest daughter, wants to work to support the family, but Ramu refuses. She falls in love with Thangavelu, their neighbour’s son. When Thangavelu’s father objects, Thangavelu leaves home and fakes his death during a war. The family suffers from hunger. One day, when her brother shares food with a beggar, Lalitha decides to secretly take a job. Lalitha’s income helps the family. She supports her brother, Thyagu’s, dream to become a doctor, but is taken advantage of while trying to secure his admission. Later, her boss also exploits her. To meet growing demands from her family, she becomes a sex worker. Years later, Thangavelu visits her, shocked by what she has become. Lalitha’s siblings succeed in life. But when Lalitha’s sister is to marry a man Lalitha once served, it causes tension. Lalitha’s history is exposed, and her father and brother disinherit her. Finally, Udaiyaar gives dignity to her by marrying her to Thangavelu. Grateful, Lalitha breaks down with the pain and loses her mind. Arangetram is an intense psychological family drama that explores the depth of sacrificial love, the pressure of society and the silent hurt inflicted by the kith and kin. The movie superbly captures the inner conflict of a woman caught between duty and decorum. It caught the tension between the old and the new. Both intense in its character variation, and undeniably thought-provoking in its theme. Arangetram stands up over the years as a stinging statement of hypocritical morals and emotional isolation within the family.
