“Arimapatti Sakthivel” is a Tamil drama film directed by Ramesh Kandhasamy and produced by Pavan K. The cast of the film includes Pavan K. Charle, Meghnaa Ellan, and Imman Annachi in pivotal roles. The film features the story of “Sakthivel”, a man from Arimapatti, a village inhabited by a single caste. His life is turned upside down when he marries “Kavitha”, a woman from another caste. This earns him extreme backlash and threats from his own community.
Sakthivel is a director who is proud to bear the name of his village, even using its name as his own. Yet, when he opts for love over caste rules, he gets isolated and hunted. The film delves into the entrenched caste biases and the plight of people who have the courage to confront them.
For all its solid premise, Arimapatti Sakthivel doesn't leave much of an impression. The film dilutes the seriousness of its content through poorly placed comedy segments and unnatural dialogue that does not ring true. Sakthivel's and Kavitha's romance looks insipid, with familiar scenes to disappoint in bringing out their love relationship. The action scenes are shabbily choreographed at times to bring out jarring and confusing cuts. Background music is too melodramatic, straining too hard to induce feelings instead of allowing the narrative to speak on its own merit.
Even though the film tries to highlight caste discrimination, its implementation fails in intensity and consequence. The fragmented narrative and poor emotional moments fail to allow “Arimapatti Sakthivel” to become a strong social commentary for its topic.
