Synopsis
“Athomugam” is a Tamil thriller drama that is directed and written by Sunil Dev, produced by Reel Petti. The film features S. P. Siddarth, Chaitanya Pratap, Sarithiran, and Ananth Nag, exploring how a minor decision can have unexpected consequences. “Martin” (S. P. Siddarth) decides to surprise his wife, “Leena” (Chaitanya Pratap), on their anniversary by putting a spy app on her phone. Spurred by his friend, he believes that surreptitiously recording her "cute expressions" would be a heartwarming present. But what is initially an innocent idea becomes a nightmare. Using the app, Martin sees things he never thought he would, and there are some stunning surprises that upend his life. The film attempts to explore issues of privacy and trust in a relationship, but the plot attempts to sound too artificial. Using a spy app as a way of declaring love does not ring true, and how things transpire is more the result of dramatic implication than real-world implication. Visually, Athomugam has intense cinematography, sharp editing, and a very engaging background score by Saran Raghavan. The execution fails though because the film tries too hard to be clear. The cacophony of loud background music repeatedly tells the viewer how to feel rather than having the scenes define themselves. Secondly, certain characters return with overt dramatic revealings, but since they were never memorable to start with, they fail to register. Although “Athomugam” has an interesting premise, it ultimately fails in presenting an engaging thriller. The movie attempts to create tension but gets bogged down in contrived drama and uneven plot.
