Under the direction of K.S. Ravikumar, "Avvai Shanmugi” is a charming 1996 Kollywood comedy-drama. Pictured are Gemini Ganesan, Meena, and Kamal Haasan. In the film, Pandiyan, a disempowered ex-husband who has lost most of his custodial privileges, seeks to forcibly reclaim his daughter from his ex-wife. To have some much-needed quality time with his daughter after being convicted, he goes undercover as a babysitter.

Janaki files for divorce from Pandian five years into their marriage, her points being his low earnings and his busy schedule preventing him from being a proper husband, combined with cramped living arrangements. She is given custody of their daughter Bharathi, who has difficulty adjusting to the living situation. Inshha is of the view that, instigated by his buddy Basha, Pandian attempts to abduct Bharathi but fails and can’t keep up any kind of communication with her. He eventually finds out that Janaki’s father, Viswanathan Iyer, is in search of a new caregiver for Bharathi. To stay close to them, Pandian disguises himself as an elderly woman named "Avvai Shanmugi" with the help of a makeup artist, Joseph.

Shanmugi, though initially turned away for the caregiver role, wins them over after rescuing the second Bharathi from a fire by administering the proper care. As time passes, the family becomes attached to Shanmugi. Basha, posing as a silent kitchen worker, gets a little too comfortable and reveals himself when he’s not supposed to, but eventually earns trust as well. Pandian’s confusions stem from his hiding behind the mask, Janaki’s misreading of events, thinking that Shanmugi is improper. In the climax, Shanmugi comes out of disguise as her identity to Janaki, restoring peace between Janaki and Pandian, while Shanmugi’s disguise is “killed off” to keep the ruse.

With some of the most outrageous comedy-drama routines ever, “Avvai Shanmugi” takes basically a comedic premise and turns it on its head till the finish while interspersing hilarious situations and reactions with grand emotional bursts. Its unique combination of over-the-top slapstick comedy infused with genuine heartfelt family dynamics makes for a truly unforgettable cinematic experience. Avvai Shanmugi, with its finely-tuned humour and heartwarming moments, continues to be a timeless, cherished classic that appeals to audiences of all ages.
