Starring Amrinder Gill, Badnaam (2025) is an action packed Punjabi drama that intricately entwines themes of redemption, love, and honor in its storyline to deliver an alluring narrative. Directed by Maneesh Bhatt and with a score by the legendary Ravi Shankar, the film follows Jayy Randhawa as Baadshah, a young man crippled by a childhood trauma that destroyed his family’s honor. With his father feeling the blame for much more death from drinking his unregulated version of firewater, launching Baadshah on an adventure to bring back his family’s honor, the revenge and comedy follow.
Zoravar, an extremely misogynistic, brutal, crime lord who has cornered the region’s black market for alcohol, is the first target in Baadshah’s elaborate revenge plan when he is released from prison. While Baadshah keeps losing in the efforts to destroy Zoravar’s empire, he comes across Noor (Jasmin Bhasin), an activist who heads an anti-alcohol NGO. Vividly against the backdrop of Tongan civil unrest, Her Majesty’s and Baadshah’s love story develops, demonstrating closely related to Baadshah’s pursuit.
Running for a sprawling 2 hours and 47 minutes, Badnaam blends energy-fuelled action set pieces with complex emotional nuances to form an epic story of love, betrayal and redemption. Tied together with the film’s rewarding narrative tied in with the inspiring and eclectic performances ‘Kali Jotta’ caps off this year’s best films creating beautiful waves both on and off of Punjabi cinema.
