“Black” is a 2024 Tamil science-fiction horror movie by KG. Balasubramaniam, produced by Potential Studio. Starring Jiiva, Priya, and Bhavani Shankar, the movie is a remake of the 2013 American film Coherence by James Ward Byrkit. It is about newlywed couple Vasanth and Aaranya, whose honeymoon turns into horror when they are stuck in a black hole that constantly shifts timelines whenever they travel through it.
In 1964, a pair, “Ganesh and Lalitha”, elope with their friend Manohar, who secretly has feelings for Lalitha. Along the way, they encounter a mysterious angel statue that is in the middle of the road. They are able to push it aside and arrive at Manohar's beach house, where he intends to murder them due to jealousy. Before he can do so, however, he finds Ganesh and Lalitha already dead. In a chilling realization, Manohar realizes he is the murderer, caught in an irreversible cycle of destiny.
Sixty years hence, “Vasanth and Aaranya”, a troubled married couple, travel to revive their relationship. They visit a new township, where the same angel statue of 1964 is still intact, even though there have been several attempts to uproot it. Later, strange things begin to happen; paintings change mysteriously, fires start without cause, and ghostly whispers in the darkness haunt their apartment. In their exploration, they discover that they are inadvertently traversing timelines, running into alternate sets of themselves.
An explosive fight makes Aaranya believe that Vasanth has cheated on her, catapulting her to a different reality. Vasanth, on the other hand, finds an older Manohar, who enlightens him on the truth: the dark zone they have been crossing is actually a wormhole caused by the supermoon that opens parallel universes. Vasanth has to locate Aaranya before the supermoon dissipates or never see her again. But in order to reboot his reality, he might need to kill his alternate self.
In a dramatic denouement, Vasanth reunites apparently with Aaranya, yet gets the feeling something is wrong. Looking at him, the sinister possibility lingers; is he actually in his correct timeline, or is his alternate self still close by?
