“Chiclets” is a Tamil-Telugu teen drama film directed by Muthu M and produced by S Srinivasan Guru. Starring Sathvik Varma, Jack Robinson, and Nayan Karishma, the movie is about the lives of three teenage girls going through friendships, freedom, and what parents want.
The film revolves around three teenage girls who tell their parents they are attending a wedding but end up going away secretly to a party with their boys. The fun time spent at the party is interrupted by the revelation to their parents when they uncover the deceit, bringing about conflict and tension. The movie moves into tension and drama as things escalate, symbolizing teen rebellion against parents.
Though Chiclets initially looks like a teen sex comedy, it then becomes a moralistic drama about parenting and teen responsibility. But the shift happens abruptly, and the movie ends up looking unsure of what its message is. It tries to foreground teenage life from a female point of view, which is rare in the genre, but does not go beyond objectification.
Ultimately, “Chiclets” can't make up its mind what it wants to be: neither fully committed to its teen comedy heritage nor able to deliver on its moral message. Although it tries to reflect the harshness of life for teenagers and parents' worries, it doesn't quite manage, leaving viewers with an uneven and forgettable one.
