"C/O Kaadhal" (2021) is an anthology slice-of-life film written and directed by Hemambar Jasti, in Tamil language, which follows the theme of love on lines of age, class, and social divides on a gentle basis. In Madurai city's vibrant life, the film interweaves four close love tales, each in varying emotional tenor but the same in sentiment.
The first segment introduces Palani (Deepan), 49-year-old school peon, who gets ridiculed as never having been married. Beneath his stoic forbearance lies a secret crush on Radha (Sonia Giri), his widow employer. Their slow-burning romance transcends ageist and stereotypical beliefs and leaves room for a romance premised on maturity and respect for each other. In the second subplot, schoolboy Velu (Nishesh) and classmate Sunita (Shwetha) evolve their first naive crushes for one another. Their innocence and childish ways in their conduct portray the naivety and befuddlement of adolescent love.
The third narrative is that of Joseph (Karthik Rathnam), a thug, who finds himself falling in love with Bharghavi (Ayra), a Brahmin girl. Their romance hangs precariously on the sword edge of caste, class, and living standards, testing the tolerance levels in a conservative society. Dhaadi (Vetri), a shop hand selling alcohol, in the meantime, has an attraction to Saleema (Mumtaz Sorcar), a tough and shielded sex worker. His attempts to approach her are greeted with resistance at first, but slowly she comes to recognize sincerity in Dhaadi's love, and we are left wondering if love can cure wounds deep-seated in the mind.
Each of these tales is told with candour, capturing poignant and subtle feeling that remains deeply resonant. The movie concludes with uneven outcomes some unions are consummated, others remain unresolved, but all leave an enduring emotional trace.
"C/O Kaadhal" is a faithful remake of the Telugu film Care of Kancharapalem, and director Hemambar Jasti is able to capture its soul. While it can't help but be compared with the original, it succeeds on its own as an honest and emotionally resonant film about the eternality of love.
