“College Kumar” is a 2020 Indian comedy-drama film written and directed by Hari Santhosh. A remake of the 2017 Kannada film of the same name, it was shot simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu. The Tamil version stars Prabhu, while the Telugu version features Rajendra Prasad in the lead role, along with Rahul Vijay, Priya Vadlamani, and Madhoo. The film was released on 6 March 2020 in both languages.
Known as Prabhu in Tamil and Thiru Kumaran in Telugu, Sasi is a humble peon with a big dream for his son, Shiva Kumar. He works under an arrogant auditor who constantly belittles him, but Sasi remains determined, vowing that Shiva will become an auditor one day. Convinced that education leads to success, he does his best to guide his son. But Shiva is not ambitious and falters in college. His mother, Janaki (Madhoo), is just as disillusioned. Their hopes are dashed when Shiva gets caught cheating on an exam and is expelled from college, with a dramatic turning point in their lives.
Frustrated and angry, Sasi confronts his son, only to find Shiva challenging him in turn. He dared to take up a challenge to join college and earn a degree himself if he thinks education is so important. Instead of backing down, Sasi accepts the challenge and enrolls as a student.
Rest of the film sees Sasi adapting to college life, studying side by side with much younger mates, and convincing his son that learning has no age bar. His determination and perseverance teach many valuable lessons not only to the son but to all around.
“College Kumar” stands out as an inspiring and entertaining film. It calls for hard work, self-respect, and the fact that it is never too late for one to dream.
