“Dhonima” is a Tamil drama film directed by Jagadeesan Subu and features Kaali Venkat, Roshni Prakash, and Vishav Raj. The movie describes the struggles of an impoverished mother, an undernourished child, and the unlikely relationship with a saved dog.

“Dhanam” (Roshni Prakash) is a diligent domestic worker who struggles daily to scrape together funds for her son Dravid's ear operation. Her husband, “Kotti” (Kaali Venkat), is an alcoholic who does not care for his family and leaves Dhanam all alone to do everything by herself. One day, on her way back home from work, she sees a Golden Retriever puppy abandoned in a dustbin. In spite of being short of money, she takes the puppy back home and names her Dhonima. Dravid, having been perpetually lonely and alienated from society, develops a deep emotional attachment with the dog almost instantly.

As Dravid and Dhonima become inseparable, Kotti hates the dog, regarding it as an unwanted encumbrance. He continues ranting his anger on Dhanam and the puppy, increasing the family's misery. Dhanam remains adamant in her choice, considering that Dhonima brings friendship and happiness into her son's life. Despite judgment from neighbors and financial issues, she never gives up the dog.

With the passing of time, Dhonima turns out not only to be a pet: she turns into a guardian and emotional support of Dravid. When disaster catches up with them and Dravid gets into peril, Dhonima sacrifices herself to rescue him, and then Kotti truly understands the importance of his son and the dog.

“Dhonima” is a heartwarming but emotional drama that follows the sacrifices of a mother, silent struggles of a child, and unusual love from an animal. The strong performances and emotional scenes in the movie make it an emotional experience. Although the slow pace and repetitive confrontations sometimes dilute its effect, overall, the core message of the story of love, strength, and hope lingers on, and “Dhonima” becomes an emotional watch for animal lovers and family drama fans alike.
