Directed by T. J. Joy, En Kadhal Kanmani is a romantic comedy from 1990 in Tamil cinema. It features Vikram, Rekha Nambiar, V.K. Ramasamy, and S. S. Chandran. A wealthy businessman must quit his lifelong smoking habit in 15 days to marry the woman he loves and inherit her father’s fortune. As sabotage and passion rage, he discovers that love, not power, rules the stars.

Vinodh successful businessman, has suffered from a smoking addiction since he was a young child. He is deeply in love with Hema, whose father is on death’s doorstep from a long chain-smoking addiction. One day, Hema urgently calls Vinodh to visit her father. Even then, Vinodh smokes on the way. When her father tries to smoke on his deathbed, Vinodh stops him. At that moment, Hema’s father shares a powerful thought: "However we might have imagined it, even if things had gone that way, it still wouldn’t be like this. But now that it is, let’s take it as it is, because no matter how it was, it could never have become exactly how we wanted." He then reveals his final wish: whoever marries Hema and treats her with love and care will inherit his ₹10 crore property, but only if Vinodh quits smoking in 15 days. If Vinodh fails, Sundaram, a non-smoker and the company manager, will marry Hema.

Vinodh struggles every day to quit smoking. Hema catches him almost smoking and tells him to choose between her and cigarettes. Sundaram tries to win by sabotaging Vinodh, even kidnapping Hema. Vinodh rescues her and proves his love. On the 15th day, they return to Hema’s overjoyed father. He smokes one last time and says, "However things are supposed to be, if they had been that way, it wouldn't have turned out like this. But now that it has, let’s accept it as it is, no matter how things unfold." Knowing that his daughter is in good hands, he dies quietly.

A touching romantic comedy, En Kadhal Kanmani depicts the emotional conflict between love and addiction and emphasises how relationships are frequently put to the ultimate test by personal change. The film starts and ends with a provocative message that reflects difficulties in real life, giving viewers a greater understanding of acceptance, personal development, and life's unpredictable nature. It's a straightforward but profound movie that has an impact long after it ends.
