"Ethir Neechal" (2013) is an Indian Tamil sports comedy-drama film directed and written by R. S. Durai Senthilkumar. The movie features Sivakarthikeyan, Priya Anand, and Nandita Swetha in the lead roles. It is a tale about a young boy ashamed of his name who signs up for the Chennai Marathon in an attempt to prove himself and transform his life.
The film takes off in 1985 in Thanjavur when a man gives his son the name Kunjithapadham (Sivakarthikeyan) after a god who rescues his wife at the time of delivery. As the boy grows, he is regularly ridiculed for his name, which goes against his build and affects his self-confidence. Once his mother gets better from illness and they shift to Chennai, Kunjithapadham attempts to begin anew. Years down the line, following the demise of his mother, he changes his name to Harish and his fortunes change. He lands a better job, and a new apartment, and falls in love with Geetha (Priya Anand), a schoolteacher. Matters come to a head when he wins a lottery on a ticket bearing his previous name, and Geetha discovers that he has been dishonest about his identity.
In an effort to regain the trust of Geetha and justify himself, Harish enrols for the Chennai Marathon. He encounters J. Prakash (Jayaprakash), a gentle trainer and Valli (Nandita Swetha), a gifted ex-runner whose talents were wrecked by a crooked coach. When Harish learns that Valli is fighting, he decides to make her plight his own, to mobilize support for her. He runs so hard that he not only wins the marathon but reveals the corrupt coach’s actions as a fraud to the public. Inspired by his journey, Valli returns to athletics. Harish establishes a sporting training academy in his native name, Kunjithapadham, and goes as far as to reunite Valli with her sweetheart, Dinakaran (Attakathi Dinesh).
"Ethir Neechal" is a tear-jerking movie that blends comedy, sentimentality, and sports. Sivakarthikeyan performs well as an endearing underdog, ably supported by a talented cast and an uncomplicated narrative. The movie balances personal development seamlessly with social issues. While predictable in parts, its theme of self-acceptance and perseverance makes it a fun and motivational movie for everyone.
