"Ettuthikkum Para" is a 2020 Tamil drama film directed by Keera and starring Samuthirakani, Nitish Veera, Munishkanth, Shaju Mon, and Chandini Tamilarasan. The film is about a number of loosely connected stories on issues of society such as casteism, social injustice, and how common man keeps his existence going.
Ambedkar (Samuthirakani) is a fearless social activist who carries on a crusade against government corruption. His activism cost him dearly when his son and his friends were brutally murdered, but he continued with his fight for justice.
The second is a lower caste man (Nitish Veera) who wishes to marry the higher caste girl, which society objects to. Then there's Chandini Tamilarasan as Divyasree Kumaravel, who runs away from family clutches to Chennai with the man of her choice Shaju Mon but relatives do not hesitate over caste sentiment and make her return to the family home.
The second story line makes two elderly sit and wait desperately for the end because society leaves them to this fate. It shows how an unattended elder suffers emotionally in this ride.
A sick son, desperate to save, Pattakkathi (Ramdoss), is a struggling clown who needs Rs. 20,000 for treatment but does not have the means to arrange the money. His story represents the plight of the working class, which has to fight everyday battles to survive.
As these five disparate stories unfold with their lives unpredictably crossing, they reveal the brutal realities of caste discrimination and social injustice in the face of human resilience. The film provides a raw emotional picture of how people fight an oppressive system: each carrying his or her own burden but bonded by a common struggle for dignity and survival.
“Ettuthikkum Para” is a film that provokes deep thought within the viewer's mind, and issues of deep-seated caste and inequality have been brought forward in society.
