"Expend4bles" (2023) is an American action thriller and the fourth in The Expendables franchise series, directed by Scott Waugh. It is a cast-crammed feature film starring Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Megan Fox, 50 Cent, Dolph Lundgren, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, and Andy Garcia.
The film is about another mission in which the Expendables are assigned to Libya in order to neutralize a threatening mercenary, Suarto Rahmat, from pilfering nuclear warheads. Headed by "Barney Ross" (Sylvester Stallone), the crew comprises "Lee Christmas" (Jason Statham), Gunner Jensen, Toll Road, and newcomers Galan and Easy Day. The operation soon becomes fatal when their aircraft gets blown up and Barney is presumed to have died in the explosion, identified by only his distinctive ring.
Ghastened by the loss of Barney, the team is realigned. CIA operative Marsh expels Christmas from the mission and assigns "Gina" (Megan Fox), Christmas's past lover, as the mission's new head. Christmas spies on the mission in secret meanwhile and learns more about the cryptic villain identified only as Ocelot. It's established that Ocelot intends to initiate World War III by activating pilfered nukes within the Russian Far East.
Christmas travels to Thailand to retrieve "Decha" (Tony Jaa), an old Expendable who turned his back on violence. With him, they sneak aboard the ship that has the warheads and rescue the team in custody. In one last twist, it turns out Marsh is Ocelot, and Barney had staged his own death to uncover him. Barney and Christmas neutralize the nuclear threat at the last second.
"Expend4bles" offers decent action and stylish fight scenes, but it over depends on a proven formula. While the star power and stunts make the film enjoyable to watch, the formulaic story and lack of emotional depth make it a mere addition to the franchise rather than a knockout.
