Friendship

"Friendship" (2021) is a Tamil sports-action drama directed by John Paul Raj and Sham Surya. The film features Harbhajan Singh, Arjun Sarja, and Losliya Mariyanesan and is an adaptation of the Malayalam film Queen. Based on a college campus, the plot commingles friendship, emotion, and justice in a dramatic structure.

"Anitha" (actress Losliya) is a bubbly first-year mechanical engineering student who is an instant hit with her peers. Although an orphan and cancer survivor, she approaches life in a positive way and establishes deep connections with her batch mates. While undergoing treatment in the hospital, she also spreads smiles on other patients' faces and makes a close-knit crew out of her peers.

When she returns to campus, Anitha encounters Bhagat Singh, otherwise Bhajji (played by Harbhajan Singh), a senior and her kindred spirit when it comes to Tamil culture. He becomes the friend group, and an intense emotional bonding develops among them. Their life in college is replete with such typical experiences: hilarious classes, hostel pranks, cricket, campus festivities, and heavy discussions on friendship.

The plot takes a negative turn when Anitha, who had gone home for a visit, is abducted and raped. She dies due to the shocking act. Her close friends are left shattered and decide to get justice. With the help of Advocate Mukundan (Arjun Sarja), they battle in the courts of law against influential criminals, corrupt officials, and political clout.In extremely dramatic courtroom trials, the criminals are found guilty and sentenced to death.

"Friendship" conveys a powerful message on women's safety and justice in an emotional and engaging narrative. Harbhajan Singh is impressive in his acting debut, and Arjun Sarja adds solidity to the courtroom drama. Although some scenes are melodramatic, the film is commended for extracting friendship, gender respect, and social awareness. It's a mix of young energy and serious matters that attempts to make an impact.
