“Galtha” is a 2020 Tamil political thriller directed by S. Hari Uthraa, based on real-life events of illegal waste dumping along Tamil Nadu's border districts. The movie shows the harmful impact of hazardous medical waste and how corrupt politics enables it.
It is a mythical village called Thannilankadu, where simple people live in simple simplicity; the serenity is broken by huge trucks which begin to pour medical and industrial wastes from Kerala. Hazardous materials were poured across Tamil Nadu's checkposts and through these huge trucks by corrupt politicians and officials. The villagers cannot do anything about it and get ignored in their concerns.
Lenin, a young bold boy from the village, sees strange health problems in the people. Many people in the village fall sick and an unknown virus starts spreading very fast. The air and water get polluted and the village is not a good place to stay. Lenin with Isaiarasi (Ayra) and Guna (Antony) decides to know the truth about these illegal activities.
As Lenin digs deep, he finds out that politicians and businessmen are reaping a share from the deadly business at the expense of the public. He now resolves to end the situation but encounters powerful resistance forces. Fighting was not going to be an easy task: there were threats, violence, and betrayal on the way. Despite all the danger, Lenin does not quit and inspires people in the village to join his course.
“Galtha” is a thriller where the story highlights environmental pollution, political corruption, and the misplaced fortunes of unchecked greed and the film imparts a tremendous social message to the masses.
The film “Galtha” should not be viewed by a viewer who has special feelings toward a political drama. The film, therefore, can be a wonderful way of having entertainment together with creating social consciousness.
