“Glassmates” is a Tamil drama film directed by Kuttypuli Sharavana Shakthi, starring Angaiyar Kannan, Kuttypuli Sharavana Shakthi, Mayilsamy, and Chaams in main roles. The movie is about two close friends sharing a strong bonding based on their alcoholism. Their addiction makes others follow them as well, and hence they get involved in trouble frequently. They fail to heed the advice given by their friends and families to lead a normal life, drawing others into addiction too.
Determined to change, the duo joins a detox program, but instead of improving, they proceed to make their doctor an alcoholic. This releases mayhem in their town, touching their lives and those of their families. They only believe their actions are harmless fun, but a tragic accident makes them realize the seriousness of their actions. The question is left hanging: will this wake-up call be enough for them to change their ways?
Although Glassmates is intended to depict the pitfalls of alcoholism, it spends more time displaying scenes of debauchery. The film tends to be remiss, and rowdy, melodramatic sequences overwhelm its overall message. But the emotional weight does filter through in several scenes, particularly in those depicting family members' issues.
Abi Nakshatra excels as a resolute student with high ideals, and Brana convincingly acts as a trusting wife caught between love and desperation. The lead actors convincingly play habitual drunkards, adding authenticity to their characters. Flawed in its execution, “Glassmates” has a powerful social message regarding addiction and its effects, leaving the viewer with a memorable lesson.
