Ilamai Oonjal Aadukirathu is a romantic film by C. V. Sridhar from Tamil cinema. It features Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Sripriya, Jayachitra and Nirmalamma. The story is about Murali’s family, who raise Prabhu, an orphan, and help him secure a job in their company. Complications develop when Prabhu and his girlfriend Padma are distant apart. Murali, unaware of their history and gets engaged to her. Therefore, it creates emotional turmoil and insight.
Orphan Prabhu is reared by his close friend Murali's mother and serves as the general manager at Murali's marketing company in Madras. Padma, a college student, is deeply in love with Prabhu, yet unaware of this, Murali also starts to show interest in her. Padma refuses Murali's advances, hence increasing his interest. Though aware that Prabhu loves Padma, Jayanthi, a young widow and Padma's relative, also works at the agency and covertly wants him. During a trip to Jayanthi’s village, Prabhu ends up alone with her and, after a moment of weakness, they sleep together.
Feeling guilty, he leaves a letter and returns. Padma, who reads the letter, is heartbroken and distances herself. Meanwhile, Murali impresses Padma’s father and proposes marriage. Padma stays silent. When Prabhu confronts her, she reveals she knows about Jayanthi’s pregnancy. Shocked, Prabhu leaves Madras. Murali later finds Jayanthi’s letter and feels betrayed. Prabhu finds Jayanthi in Bangalore and marries her just before she dies in an accident. He heads for Ooty and restarts. Old issues surface when Murali and Padma meet him once more. Padma, though, provides everything. Having seen the truth, Murali forgives Prabhu and brings closure to all by reuniting him with Padma.
Ilamai Oonjal Aadukirathu is an emotionally complex romantic drama investigating friendship, love, guilt and redemption. The movie is remarkable for its sensitive depiction of difficult relationships, the emotional repercussions of unsaid truths.
