"Jagame Thandhiram" (2021) by Karthik Subbaraj is an action thriller Tamil film featuring Dhanush, James Cosmo, Joju George, and Aishwarya Lekshmi. The film tells the story of Suruli, a Madurai gangster whose life of destruction takes a sharp turn when he becomes involved with the brutal gangland of London.

Suruli (Dhanush), who operates a parotta shop as a front for his illegal dealings, has a tough time finding a bride because of his reputation. When he kills a brother of a rival, his engagement collapses, and he goes into hiding. Suruli is approached by John, an aide to Peter Sprott (James Cosmo), a racist British crime lord, with an offer of a fortune to kill Sivadoss (Joju George), who is a competitor and who assists immigrants via smuggling. Tempted by money, Suruli accepts and goes to London.

Upon arrival, Suruli makes a violent attack on Sivadoss's business, gaining his employer's confidence. But Sivadoss captures Suruli and suggests a plot to kill Sprott. In spite of consenting, Suruli betrays Sivadoss and helps Sprott kill him. In return, Sprott grants Suruli ownership of "Little Madurai," a London enclave for Tamil immigrants. While so, Suruli develops love for Attila, who is a widow connected to the group of Sivadoss without knowing his motive for revenge. Although at first she plans to murder him, Attila spares Suruli on learning of the latter's turnaround.

Gradually, Suruli realizes Sprott's true intention: an anti-immigration law which will damage those he has grown to care about. In his final act of defiance, Suruli spares a kind minster's life and steals Sprott's ill-gotten money instead. Suruli forces Sprott out and departs him alone and stateless.

"Jagame Thandhiram" is an energetic, style conscious gangster drama with a message about the immigrant's plight that blends dark humor with dramatic heft. Though its garish action numbers and Dhanush's macho charisma are compelling, the film's inconsistent tone sometimes sabotages its emotional impact.
