"Kanni Raasi" (2020) is a Tamil romantic comedy film directed by Muthukumaran and produced by Shameem Ibraham. Based in the rural setting of Tenkasi, the movie is about Gemini Ganesan (Vimal), a free-spirited young man belonging to a family where love marriages are favoured and welcomed. Ironically, Gemini is firmly against falling in love and prefers an arranged marriage, much to the dismay of his family, especially his uncle Thiruvengadam (Pandiarajan), who comes from a lineage known for their romantic flair.

The story takes a turn when Anjali (Varalaxmi Sarathkumar), a spirited and progressive school teacher, moves into the house opposite Gemini’s with her family. In contrast to Gemini, Anjali is a strong believer in love marriage and is amused by his orthodox leanings. Fascinated by his opposition, she decides to fall in love with him, and things take a series of funny and light-hearted turns. As time passes, the charm of Anjali, her persistence, and the goodness of her heart start to thaw Gemini's inflexible attitude towards love, and he begins to feel for her.

Then, however, complications arise when Gemini's family tries to arrange his marriage with another girl, leading to emotional conflict and misunderstandings. Anjali, refusing to give up, goes out of her way to teach Gemini the value of choosing love over expectations. Finally, Gemini realizes his true feelings and finds the strength to defy his own beliefs. The movie concludes with a joyous union, and Gemini finally accepts love and gives the family their dream of another grand love marriage.

"Kanni Raasi," with the new location, is handicapped by a weak script and underwhelming execution. Going-by-numbers plot, uneven character arcs, and excessive use of tropes dilute the emotional core. Even when Varalaxmi delivers a good performance, the film is weighed down by misplaced comedy, choppy editing, and songs that fail to help the film pick up, thus ending up as an easily forgettable romance.
