“Kaatteri” (2022) is a Tamil horror-comedy written and directed by Deekay and produced by Studio Green. Starring Vaibhav, Sonam Bajwa, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, and Aathmika, the film combines ghost stories, treasure hunts, and inept criminals in a creepy rural landscape.
The film starts with a spurious incident in 1968 during a village festival in Kolaatipuram, when an unexpected power cut causes bizarre chaos. Cut to 2019, when three small-time criminals, Jai, Kaliyurunda, and Sankar, abduct a woman called Kamini for ransom. Their scheme is foiled, however, when their ganglord mastermind, Naina, double-crosses them. They abandon their scheme and come across Kiran and his wife, Shwetha, who makes a more sophisticated re-abduction offer and demands a higher ransom.
Taking a cue from Kamini, the team goes to locate Maanga Mani, a treasure hunter who was last spotted in Kolaatipuram. When they arrive, they find that the village is trapped in 1968 and infested with ghosts of its past inhabitants. Despite their best efforts to leave, they find themselves back at the same village festival. Kamini later informs them that a ghost named Mathamma has already kidnapped Sankar and warns them about the paranormal threats.
To retrieve the gold and break the curse, they have to face Mathamma. Her origin story is a disturbing tale of her sister Mohini and a voodoo well that is teeming with gold. Greed, deception, and selflessness in 1968 created a vengeful ghost named Kaatteri, and the village has been stuck in a time warp since.
“Kaatteri” attempts to mix horror with comedy and nostalgia, presenting a combination of creepy backstories and slapstick mayhem. Although the movie has a promising idea, the storytelling tends to be disjointed. The characters are underdeveloped, and the humour at times deflates the tension. Although the movie is set in a spooky location and has ghostly legends, it relies more on slapstick than on scares, and thus it is an uneven but slightly amusing ride.
