Kezhapaya (2023)

"Kezhapaya" (2023) is a Tamil-language action thriller that comes under the direction of Yazh Gunasekaran, featuring Kathiresan kumar and Krishbakumar as the central figures and bringing on board the season Cinemas label under producer R. Kathiresan. It is set fully on one very isolated bypass road, involving high tension but low numbers in the way of characters. The tale opens with four individuals: three men and a pregnant woman, riding in a car, speeding toward a hospital. They are halted along the way by "Sundaresan" (Kathiresakumar), a 60-year-old gentleman pedaling along the middle of the road at a slow pace. For all their demands and growing ire, Sundaresan will not give in or acknowledge them, firm with an unspoken but unbending determination. What starts as a small setback soon gathers momentum. The mob tries to threaten and even physically assault the old man, but Sundaresan keeps piling his cycle, unmoved and unrelenting. As the altercations become more intense, villagers begin to gather, including the on-duty officer and Sundaresan's own kin. What seems like stubbornness slowly reveals a greater reality; Sundaresan is not just some aged man in the way of traffic. He waits for a life-or-death moment and shrewdly uses the highway as his stage to expose his secret enemies. The engagement of the police, in a rapid manner, completely changes the trajectory of the narrative. Private agendas are unveiled and instead of what appears to be a petty snake pit of a squabble on the street, is actually an epic battle for justice and survival as a final destination. "Kezhapaya" is a wise, human-lead thriller that depicts the courage and resilience that may be had from unlikely places in the most expected ways. From plain settings and a talented cast, the movie gets the most out of its brief run-time. Kathiresan Kumar is superb here, and even if the double-negative plot of the movie can be really unusual, it hooks the viewers to the last frame.
