Rana, played by Rajnikanth and Sena are both twin brothers hailing from the kingdom of Kottaipattinam. Rana however decides to leave home and accidentally falls into a river and is found by fishermen from the rival kingdom of Kalingapuri. Rana grows up to learn sword fighting and is trained to be a tough warrior. He eventually gets assigned as the commander-in-chief of the kalingapuri’s army by the king Mahendran.

Later Mahendran’s son Veera shows him a mine where captured soldiers of Kottaipattinam, work as slaves. He proposes an idea to Veera, that they free the soldiers and train them into joining the Kalingapuri Army. Veera agrees with king Mahendra’s approval and all the soldiers are freed. Thus, Rana accomplishes his task by fooling king Mahendran and his son to free his soldiers and they return back to Kottaipattinam.

Rana goes back to his kingdom and reunites with his family and friends. He falls in love with his childhood friend princess Vadhana, played Deepika Padukone. One day Rana wears a make and tries to kill Vadhana’s father. Infuriated and heartbroken she throws him into prison to be killed. Rana then explains why he wanted to kill him saying how her father had killed his years ago by falsely accusing him and executing him publicly.

Vadhana understands and pleads with her father to free him but he refuses and Rana escapes. Her father arranges for her to get married to Veera. But the people of the kingdom curse the King for marrying his daughter to a rival for his own selfish needs. A war begins between the two kingdoms but eventually Kottaipattinam wins the war and Rana unites with Vadhana.
