Kodi Parakkuthu is an action film by Bharathiraja from 1988. It stars Rajinikanth, Bhagyalakshmi and Manivannan. The movie centres on the dangerous double life led by an intense law enforcer as he works to take down an elusive drug lord while unknowingly seeking out his mother, who abandoned him as a baby. With truth, love, and justice undeniably confronting each other, he risks everything to make right the wrongs of the past and live up to his family’s legacy.

Jagadhala Prathap Dhadha (JDP Dhadha) forges his way to becoming a strong local gangster after winning an epic bout and starts collecting commissions from shopkeepers. DCP Sivagiri, a no-nonsense police officer brought up by his uncle (the Commissioner), is on the trail of a drug mafia lord, GD, linked to a corrupt former jailer. When GD finds out that the ex-jailer can testify against him, he orders his death. As Sivagiri begins intercepting GD’s drug shipments, she soon finds herself on GD’s radar and in her crosshairs. To prevent him from doing so, GD employs JDP Dhadha to eliminate Sivagiri. Things turn ugly when JDP falls in love with GD’s daughter, while she, in turn, falls for Sivagiri. Sivagiri is on the quest to find his missing mother, using an ancient photograph.

As the plot develops, GD murders the ex-jailer’s wife, but Sivagiri eventually finds evidence and exposes GD’s crimes. GD escapes conviction through political connections and backroom dealing. Sivagiri marries GD’s daughter in the temple, where a poor homeless woman blesses them by giving them the wedding necklace (Thali). Only later does it emerge that she is Sivagiri’s biological mother. She has an equally tragic backstory with the death of her original love interest husband and the loss of her son. After GD kidnaps her, Sivagiri learns the truth and turns into JDP Dhadha to take on evil and restore justice. Finally, he defeats GD and raises the flag at his father’s former school, the realisation of his deceased parents’ shared legacy.

Kodi Parakkuthu is a poignant, pulse-pounding action drama that marries heart with high-octane thrills. A cinematic justice story, crime drama, and story of black identity and redemption all in one, The Burial serves up a morally complex tale with a lot to chew on. Anchored by its strong female cast and a visceral physical performance from De Armas, with its kinetic direction and explosive emotional climax, it packs a wallop. It’s a transcendently cinematic achievement that continues to have audiences contemplating the ideas of duty, sacrifice and the indelible ties that form a man’s path to truth and legacy.
