Synopsis

“Kolai” is a Tamil psychological thriller film, released in 2023 and directed by Balaji K. Kumar, and it features Vijay Antony, Ritika Singh, and Meenakshi Chaudhary. Kolai is in the traditional murder mystery genre but wrapped in the dark and eerie atmosphere that preserves the suspense to the very end. The narrative opens with a horrific murder of “Laila” (Meenakshi Chaudhary), who is both a model and an aspiring singer, discovered lifeless in her flat. With it being a high-profile case and shrouded with mystery, the importance surfaces. A fresher IPS officer, “Sandhya Mohanraj” (Ritika Singh), played by Ritika Singh, is designated to solve the same case. Eager to prove her skills, she dives deep into the investigation. She finds the complexity getting bigger and begins to seek the help of her mentor, “Vinayak” (Vijay Antony), who is portrayed by Vijay Antony. Vinayak, an ex-investigative officer struggling with personal anguish, initially is reluctant to get involved in the case but later joins. Sandhya and Vinayak start to dig into the layers of Leila's life. Their suspects are her boyfriend Sathish, her friend and photographer Arjun, a marketing agent Aditya Kaushik from Bombay, and a neighborhood thief Babloo. Since the duo interrogates all the participants, concealed agendas and previous affiliations are revealed, tainting every character with suspicion. The audience is left in suspense throughout the movie since each suspect appears to have motive to kill Leila. As each secret unfolds, the mystery draws closer to revealing the murder's truth and the killer's identity. “Kolai” presents a familiar yet interesting whodunit experience. The movie excels with its taut atmosphere, strong performances, and psychological complexity. Although the central plot is based on a familiar formula, Balaji K. Kumar's direction and Vijay Antony's understated yet effective performance as a damaged investigator provide emotional depth, and it is a good and engaging thriller.
