"Kottukkaali" (The Adamant Girl) is a 2024 Tamil-language road drama that has been penned and directed by P. S. Vinothraj and is produced by SK Productions. Anna Ben and Soori appear in the movie, which explores caste, convention, and personal freedom in a deeply rooted village story.

The story is based on "Meena", a girl in love with a boy from a subjugated caste. Her family does not approve of her decision and assumes she is being cast a spell. "Paandi", her mother's brother, comes from abroad to marry her but is appalled at her defiance. Determined to "cure" her, he takes her on a journey to a seer, accompanied by relatives and friends.

Along the way, the team experiences several delays: car breakdowns, interpersonal conflicts, and even halting at their family god's temple for rituals. As tensions peak, Paandi becomes more violent, belting Meena for humming a tune and striking back at his own relatives. Two guys in the party gossip about Meena's boyfriend, speculating that maybe she's pregnant, further tending their theory that she needs to be halted.

Upon arrival at the seer's place, they find another young girl going through "healing" through some haunting rituals. The seer performs exorcism-style rituals, extracting an infertility spell supposedly. Paandi is revolted by what she sees and turns back but is driven to return. The film ends on a mind-provoking message: "The end of this journey is in your hands."

"Kottukkaali" is a low-profile but power-packed movie that portrays the mundane struggle of caste and patriarchy in rural India. It is a slow narrative, one tends to watch and not respond. There are repetitive sequences although intense ones are created. RAW realism and strong performances render the film a must-watch. Sivakarthikeyan should be praised for coming up with such a bold and strong project.
