Maan Karate (2014)

"Maan Karate" is a Tamil sports comedy film released in 2014 and written and directed by Krish Thirukumaran. The movie has Sivakarthikeyan, Hansika Motwani, and Vamsi Krishna in the lead roles. The movie is about some friends who attempt to alter their destiny according to a mysterious prediction found in a newspaper. Five IT engineers, Santhosh, Joe, Gokul, Vaishnavi, and Nikita, meet a magical siddhar on an outing to the forest. To try him out, they request a newspaper published on a future date when no newspaper should have been printed. Astonishingly, the siddhar produces a copy published on Ayudha Puja day. The newspaper foretells that their company will close down and that a boxer called Peter (Sivakarthikeyan) will win a competition and donate ₹2 crore to them. Pursuing that fortune, they come across Peter, a laid-back man with no experience in boxing but with a profound crush on Yazhini (Hansika Motwani), a sports enthusiast. He promises to fight for her affections but trains secretively in abstention. Subsequently, the team discovers a genuine boxer by the same name, "Killer" Peter, but he is reluctant to assist, leaving them with no option but to retain their initial choice. Peter joins the tournament and manages to win many rounds by making unusual, fortunate moves. The crowd and media nickname his technique "Maan Karate." Upon being informed about his last opponent, who is the notorious "Killer" Peter, Peter is frantic and pleads with him to let him win but is refused. The IT gang, being lured by money, betrays Peter's team. Peter is hurt and inspired and starts taking training seriously. On the day of the tournament, in spite of being inferior in strength, Peter battles courageously. Even when Yazhini begs him to leave, he doesn't give up and knocks out his competitor. Peter brings home the trophy and dedicates it to the IT gang, who now look up to his improvement and spurn the money. He tells Yazhini that he loves her, and the tale ends on the fulfilment of the prophecy. "Maan Karate" combines fantasy, humour, and sports into an entertaining, light-hearted theme. Sivakarthikeyan excels at comic timing and his transformation. Although the movie takes cinematic license, it offers feel-good moments through an uplifting underdog tale. The combination of romance, quirky surprises, and a mystical setting makes it a watchable experience.
