Directed by Rajasekhar, Maaveeran is a 1986 action film. It stars Rajinikanth, Ambika, Dara Singh and Sujatha. The film traces the fearless warrior’s son, torn from his parents during British rule, who grows up unaware of his true ancestry. Once he finds his past, he reconnects with his father, and together they battle tyranny, forging a stronghold for freedom and family.

Set in early 20th-century India under British rule. Sethupathi, a brave warrior, stops British soldiers from stealing treasures and protects his family. When his wife gives birth to their son, Sethupathi marks the baby with the word "Maaveeran," meaning Great Warrior, to symbolise strength and also known as Raja. A short time later, Sethupathi is captured by enemies, and his wife is hurt. Their baby, Sethupathi’s son, is left at an orphanage and adopted. Sethupathi’s wife loses her voice and becomes a washerwoman, and the traitor doctor rises.

Sethupathi’s son, now called Raja, grows up strong and works as a carriage driver. He falls in love with a rich girl, the doctor’s daughter, and stands up against the cruelty of the British rulers who try to destroy his community. After discovering his true heritage and learning that his father is imprisoned, Raja plans a rescue. When his adoptive parents are shot down, he strikes back savagely. In the showdown, Raja and his father Sethupathi come together, overcome their enemies and rescue their families. The movie closes with their family together again, representing hope and the struggle for India’s liberation.

Maaveeran seamlessly mixes patriotism, emotion, and drama with larger-than-life panache. Against the backdrop of colonial India, the movie brings high-octane action, audacious characters and epic visuals. Part adrenaline-fueled action, part kick-ass moments, at its heart, a very emotional, underdog story about good defeating evil. What stays with you from the film are its moving themes of identity, justice and freedom.
